A special carol service recorded at St Giles’ Church in Pontefract will be broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds on Christmas Day.

The service, which was hosted by presenter Andrew Edwards, will be aired at 6pm on Christmas Eve and noon on Christmas Day.

Fr Bob Cooper, vicar of St Giles’, said: “BBC Leeds approached us last year to hold the service, but we couldn’t because of all the building works going on at the time.”

The service took place at the start of December, and featured readings from BBC Radio Leeds presenters.

Fr Bob added: “There were more than 400 people there and it was a really lovely traditional carol service where people came together from the whole district, to get a perspective on the true meaning of Christmas.”

Featherstone Male Voice Choir and Lofthouse 2000 Brass Band performed at the service, in addition to carols sung by the congregation.

There was also a collection for the Children in Need appeal.
