Factory worker and army reservist Mark Cowley enjoyed a winter holiday with a difference when he visited Uganda to help train soldiers.
Cpl Cowley, who works as a PVC window and door manufacturer, was one of 30 army reservists who visited Eastern Africa.
He spent 11 days last month as part of the 4th Batallion The Yorkshire Regiment, training the Uganda People’s Defence Force before it crosses into Somalia to run peacekeeping operations.
Cpl Cowley, from Castleford, said: “I loved the experience and it’s great to get young soldiers through their training.
“We found the Ugandan soldiers really keen and the instructors just soaked up all the information we gave them.”
The dad-of-one was part of a group of British soldiers which helped a team of 1,900 Ugandan soldiers in military techniques.
The training course finished with the Ugandan soldiers sitting a three-day exam.
