Officers from the Central neighbourhood police team were called to the Thornes area of the city yesterday but were sceptical about the report of an Ostrich on the loose.

They called the RSPCA and they confirmed the bird was a Rhea, a bird native to South America and related to both the Ostrich and Emu family.

Officers later posted on Facebook: “We can now confirm the Rhea has been moved to a safe place and is very friendly. Not what you expect to be in the Wakefield area. GOTTA CATCH `EM ALL!”
