Family and friends are gearing up for the fourth annual bike ride in memory of a 23-year-old who died from a rare form of cancer.

Ben Waller, of Knottingley, died in September 2010 after being diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma.

The former Knottingley High School and Pontefract NEW College student was diagnosed with the disease –which only affects 200 people a year in the UK – just six weeks before his death.

His dad Tony Waller has organised many fundraising events to keep Ben’s memory alive and raise money for the Lymphoma Research Trust.

The first Bike4Ben was held in 2011 and since then it has raised more than £14,500 for the charity.

The fourth event, Bike4Ben4, takes place on Sunday, April 13, with three routes all starting and finishing at the Darrington Hotel, on Estcourt Road.

There is a 40-mile route, a 20-mile route and a five-mile route for children.

Mr Waller said: “It’s important that Burkitt’s lymphoma is thoroughly researched as little is know about the cause of the disease.

“It can turn a previously healthy person very unwell in just a matter of weeks.”
