Police had one of their busiest periods ever during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Officers across the district mainly dealt with drunks and assaults after receiving more than 1,500 calls yesterday (Wednesday).

The force had put extra staff on duty to cope with demand.

West Yorkshire Police received 1,505 calls between midnight and 5am, an increase of around 50 calls from the previous year.

By 5.30am, there were 180 people in custody across the county.

Most were arrested for drunkenness, public disorder and minor injury assaults.
