West Yorkshire Police said a male aged 16 was arrested in connection with the crash.

They confirmed that the incident had been referred to police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) because it involved a pursuit.

A police spokesman said: “The vehicle had failed to stop for police in Pontefract prior to the collision and was being pursued by a marked car.”

Chief Inspector Mark Bownass added: “We are appealing for witnesses and I would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or who saw the silver Ford Fiesta on Ackton Lane or being driven from Wakefield Road in the Pontefract area before the crash.

“A road closure was put in place while investigation work was carried out at the scene and enquiries remain ongoing.

“Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support Unit (West) on 101.”

An IPCC spokeswoman said: “The Independent Police Complaints Commission received a referral from West Yorkshire Police on Tuesday, July 19.

“This will now be assessed to determine what level of investigation, if any, is required.”
