Householders in Pontefract will be showing cold callers the door as part of a new initiative on their street.

A cold calling control zone has been launched in Cavendish Avenue by West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service, the neighbourhood policing team (NPT) and neighbourhood watch.

The scheme has been set up thanks to Proceeds of Crime Act funding.

Cold calling control zones aim to prevent incidents of doorstep crime, raise awareness of the activities of rogue traders who target vulnerable people, and give residents the confidence to say no to uninvited callers.

Information packs have been given to each house in the zone and stickers and lamppost signs about the scheme are displayed in the area.

Paul Dobson, from the NPT, said: “The simplest way of avoiding problems is to never deal on the doorstep. A polite but firm statement that you never deal on the doorstep is the best advice I can give.”
