Residents fear someone could be killed if plans for a new housing estate in Pontefract are approved.

Harron Homes wants to build 53 homes on land just off Monkhill Lane.

However, residents claim the current proposed access to the site raises traffic safety problems.

Keith Hartley, of Monkhill Lane, said: “Someone is going to get killed if this application is approved.

“With the plans as they are now, you have to literally pull into the middle of the road to see both ways.”

Access would be from a new road just off Monkhill Lane, near the railway bridge.

Mr Hartley also claims speed surveys carried out by the developer, showing the average speed of vehicles on the road to be 29mph, give an inaccurate picture.

Mr Hartley, who has lived on Monkhill Lane for seven years, said: “The average speed of vehicles on the road is more like 40mph than 29mph.

“If these plans are approved as they are it would be totally wrong. They are not safe.

“I love the view from my home and I don’t have many neighbours but it looks like I will get hundreds, given the work being already underway at the former Prince of Wales Colliery site.”

Pontefract councillor Geoff Walsh also expressed concern over the safety of the proposed access.

He said: “I am not against the development but I feel very uneasy about the access.

“If they can establish a safe access then I am all for it.”

No-one from Harron Homes was available for comment when contacted by the Express.
