Wakefield Council is to discuss plans to relocate High Well School, in South Hiendley, to Pontefract.
The cabinet will consider a report recommending moving the school to the old Chequerfield Infant School at Rookhill Road at a meeting on Tuesday.
The report states that the new site would help the school, which caters for pupils with special educational needs, to improve teaching and better meet the needs of pupils. There will be a six-week consultation before the move takes place. During this time staff will work with the nearby children’s centre, nursery and community to resolve any issues they might have. If the cabinet members approve the report, there will be a statutory notice period. If no representations are made during this time the plans will be implemented.
Coun Olivia Rowley, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It is important we continue to provide the best possible learning environments for children across the district and relocating High Well School will support the improvements needed to all young people who attend the school.
“Using the former Chequerfield Infant School site will mean the building is being put to good use and save the school money in the long term.
“We want to reassure parents, staff and residents near the proposed new site that we are going to do everything we can to make sure any transition is as smooth as possible and that there is no disruption to pupils’ education.”
