Pontefract councillor Geoff Walsh will be among those swapping their warm beds for the streets of Pontefract this weekend.

Coun Walsh will join fundraisers sleeping rough outside St Giles’ Church to raise money for The Saviour Trust homeless charity.

The group, which also includes Fr Guillermo Cavieses from St Giles’ and members of the congregation, will sleep rough from 9pm on Friday to 6.30am on Saturday.

Coun Walsh said: “We are doing it to raise money for a very important local charity.

“The Saviour Trust is a first point of call for people who are facing homelessness and it is the least we can do to help.”

The charity, based at All Saints’ Church Hall, on Baghill Lane, offers immediate and sustainable support for the homeless and those at risk of being homeless across the Five Towns.

It was set up in 2006 after a homeless man stayed in a shed belonging to All Saints’ Church’s vicar, Rev Vic Iwanuschak, for six months until he was able to find other accommodation.

The trust also offer information, advice and guidance, pastoral care and positive activities.

Coun Walsh was also part of a group who slept rough on the steps of Wakefield Catherdral to raise the plight of homelessness last year.

He added: “It got down to about -4 degrees last year and I think that’s the coldest I have ever been.

“I’m keeping a close eye on the weather forecast between now and Friday but the people we will be raising money face a lot worse conditions than us night after night.”

The group have raised more than £200 for the charity so far and more sponsors are needed. Sponsor forms are available from St Giles’ Church in Market Place, or by contacting Coun Walsh on 07973 747342.
