Despite scorching heat hundreds of cyclists took to the streets for the Prince of Wales Hospice’s annual cyclothon event last weekend.

Around 450 riders took on the event’s three routes on Sunday while families enjoyed the sun at a fun area set up in Pontefract Park.

Organisers expect the event to raise around £30,000 for the hospice, which costs £2.2m every year to keep open.

Tom Belt, marketing and communications officer, said: “Everyone did really well because it was very hot on Sunday but we had plenty of water to keep everyone going.

“At the moment, we’ve just passed the £20,000 mark but are looking on target to raise £30,000, which we’re really pleased with.”

It was the 20th annual cyclothon the Halfpenny Lane hospice has organised.

Forthcoming fundraising events include a garden party on Sunday, June 8, at the hospice and a starlight walk on Saturday, July 26, starting at Featherstone Rovers’ Big Fella’s Stadium at 8.30pm.
