Members of a Castleford group working to improve women’s lives had afternoon tea with a special visitor from Tunisia recently.
Soroptimist International (SI) of Castleford, Normanton and District – a voluntary group helping women at local, national and international level – was visited by Saida Kaddour from SI Tunis who was in Yorkshire after applying for a SI grant of friendship.
Pat Kilbane, from the Castleford group, said: “SI Yorkshire has recently been host to two Soroptimists from other countries who came to the UK through a grant of friendship.
“This is offered internationally every two years and the successful recipients come for two to three weeks, have all accommodation and food provided by the hosts and therefore only need to pay their air fare.
“They have the opportunity to see and experience the life and culture of our region and Saida thoroughly enjoyed a traditional afternoon with us”
SI Castleford, Normanton and District is one of 25 clubs in the Yorkshire region. It supports a local women’s refuge as well as Trinity Methodist Church night shelter in Castleford by providing food, toiletries, towels and bedding.
The group has also helped the Saviour Trust in Pontefract, sponsored a student’s music studies and raised money for a birthing project in the Gambia.
The club meets monthly at the Darrington Hotel.
