Pupils at the 12 schools which form part of the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust (BKCAT) picked the organisation as their charity of the year for 2015-16.

They supported the charity in memory of Bethany Jones, a former pupil of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Moorthorpe and St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School in Featherstone, who was killed in an accident on the M62.

Beth was travelling to Liverpool as part of a hen party when the minibus she was travelling in was involved in the horrific crash in 2013.

Luke Welsh, deputy head teacher at St Joseph’s said: “Beth, and some of the other girls in the crash, was airlifted to hospital by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and St Joseph’s felt that this was their opportunity, along with all the academy trust schools, to say thank you to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, for all they did to assist the accident.”

In the past academic year, students have taken part in various events to raise funds for the air ambulance.

Activities have included non-uniform days, splat the teacher games, summer balls and a sponsored fun run.

They smashed their target of £12,000, the amount of money it costs to keep both the charity’s helicopters maintained and in the air every day.

In total, they raised £15,917 and presented their donation to air ambulance volunteers in a special assembly last Friday.

Mr Welsh said: “We believe, this year, as a Catholic family, we have made a truly inspirational difference to a charity, so close to our locality.”

St Joseph’s headteacher Lesley Darren added: “On behalf of the children and staff of St Joseph’s, we would like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this year a success.”
