The three-mile Knottingley Discovery Trail covers historic landmarks including the Aire and Calder Canal and St Boltolph’s Church, named after the patron saint for travellers.

It takes in Freda’s Garden, named after Freda Turner, who lived by the canal and planted flowers along a stretch of the canal towpath.

The leaflet, produced by Wakefield Council, includes quiz questions to help spot places of interest along the way.

Coun Matthew Morley, the district council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “Knottingley has a very interesting and varied history.

“I hope this new leaflet will encourage lots of people to get out and find out more about the area.
