Pontefract shops have become the first in the Wakefield district this week to get new digital radios to help crack down on thieves.

The new Shopwatch radios, which arrived in shops in the town centre on Monday, will offer improved contact between shops and police.

Sgt Alan Studd, of Pontefract and Knottingley safer neighbourhoods team, said: “This is fantastic news for Pontefract.

“The new digital service not only improves the quality of transmissions, it will also mean that businesses will be able to contact one another, or contact the police within seconds with one touch of their handsets.”

Retailers who want to join the Shopwatch scheme will be eligible for a free one-month trial in January.

Sgt Studd added: “The Shopwatch radio system is vital to the success of our retail theft operation.

“The CCTV operators identify suspected offenders and contact each shop in turn via Shopwatch to warn them if that person is about to enter their store.

“This is as much about preventing offences as it is about detecting crime.

“We have seen a significant reduction in shoplifting offences in recent weeks and upgrading our radios will bring even more success.

“Criminals now know there is no place to hide.”
