A charity set up in the memory of Ben Manning has won more than £3,000 after topping a poll of the region’s most deserving causes.

The Ben Manning Music Foundation was set up in memory of the 17-year-old Brigshaw High School pupil, who drowned after a night out in Wakefield in January 2011.

It has been awarded £3,333 by the Benfield Charitable Trust, one of three good causes sharing £10,000 from an online public vote on its Facebook page.

The Foundation will use the cash to help its work providing funding for lessons and instruments to help disadvantaged children learn to play music.

Lee Manning, 31, Ben’s brother and the charity’s managing director, said: “We are absolutely overjoyed to be given this opportunity.

“It’s a massive achievement for us, especially for our five volunteers who have spent a great deal of time drumming up support on social media for us.

“With the money we’ll be able to fund ten more children in Yorkshire to learn to play an instrument in school for a year. We will be putting it into action straight away and have already agreed a project with a school in Wakefield.”
