A Castleford hillwalker has been found dead in the Scottish Highlands following a major search.
Graham Connell, 31, was found dead in the Jacob’s Ladder area of the Cairngorms on Monday, while five other walkers in the same group were rescued by an RAF rescue helicopter after being located by Braemar Mountain Rescue Team on a hill near Carn Tarsuinn just after noon.
They were unhurt and Mr Connell’s body was recovered shortly afterwards. The walkers were part of a larger group of 35 people visiting the Highlands, police have said.
The party are believed to be members of Leeds University’s mountaineering club. It is thought they may have become disoriented by blizzard conditions which reduced visibility, however one of the party managed to call police with a mobile phone.
Northern Constabulary and Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team co-ordinated the search, which involved more than 100 people, when the walkers were reported overdue on Sunday afternoon.
Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team and officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, who were understood to be in the area on a training exercise, also assisted in the search.
Mountain rescue personnel from RAF stations in Lossiemouth, Leuchars and Leaming also added serach, along with teams from the Lake District and Ogwen Valley in Wales, along with sniffer dogs.
Police inquiries into the incident are continuing and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
