Consultation on hospital services launched
A major consultation proposed changes to hospital services across the Wakefield district has been launched this week.
Meeting the Challenge is a three-month consultation into the restructuring of services at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs Pontefract, Pinderfields and Dewsbury hospitals.
Under the proposals, Pinderfields would become a centre for acute and complex medical care, while Pontefract and Dewsbury would provide elective and rehabilative care.
A&E departments would remain in place in all three hospitals, although only Pinderfields would treat critically ill and injuried patients.
Dr Phil Earnshaw, chairman of Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group, which is organising the consultation, said: “We want to make sure that local services provide healthcare that is on a par with the best in the country, giving patients the best possible experience and results.
“We’re confident that these proposals will help us move towards this ambition, but we want to know what people think.”
Under the proposals more diagnostic and rehabiliation services will take place at Pontefract, and Dr Earnshaw added it would see the end of patients being transferred to Dewsbury at busy times.
He said: “This is a really positive step, because at the moment if it’s busy patients can be diverted across to Dewsbury. Under these proposals they know it will be Pinderfields, with diagnostics at Pontefract and follow-up care either from their GP or at Pontefract.”
The consultation runs until May 31.
