Staff and friends of Pontefract Family Centre are tackling a 150-mile coast to coast challenge to raise funds for the service.

A team of eight will take on the challenge next month, setting off from Whitehaven on the west coast on Wednesday April 17 and arriving in Sunderland two days later.

Geoff Hunton, of the centre, said the cyclists were hoping to raise about £2,000 for the centre, on Harropwell Lane.

He added: “Time are hard and there are many projects and work to be done at the centre so we need some major fundraising activity to help ourselves.”

The centre is a day and evening care organisation for adults with learning disabilities.

Geoff added: “The aimis to raise as much as possible, and we are preparing ourselves as best we can to complete the challenge. Everyone has been training hard.”

Halfords in Pontefract has given all the bikes a healthcheck and parts and the team, of Geoff, Simon North, Christine Worth, Kev Kelly, Alison Wadkin, Bipin Uphadyay, Leo Colton and Lee Sidebottom will be supported by technical team John, Jennifer and Kirsty Hughes, while John and Sue Phillips will transport the bikes.

The centre is also planning to hold a fashion show in May to boost its funds. Anyone who wants to sponsor the riders or offer support can contact the centre via its website www.pontefractfamilycentre.org.uk, via its Facebook page or call 01977 706932.
