A NEW memorial honouring the war-time fallen has been unveiled in Castleford.

The Royal British Legion held a march on Saturday to celebrate the official unveiling of the memorial outside the Legion club on Powell Street.

The procession left the Territorial Army HQ on Ferrybridge Road and weaved through the town centre, arriving in time for a service led by the Bishop of Pontefract, Rt Rev Tony Robinson, which also marked the addition of name plaques honouring the fallen from 1914 onwards.

Bob Smith, president of Castleford British Legion, said: “The new memorial is a fitting tribute in honour of those that have given their lives for their country.

“It has also been an opportunity to record the names of the fallen from the wars on plaques adjacent to the memorial.”

Castleford Royal British Legion worked alongside Wakefield Council to replace the existing memorial outside the club with a new tribute.

It was decided that the names of the fallen would be recorded on boards outside the Castleford Royal British Legion club dating back to 1914.

Members of the public were invited to look at the records and provide the names of relatives and friends who were not recorded or correct any errors, so the records were as accurate as possible.

Castleford Coun Peter Box, leader of the council said: “This new memorial will commemorate the people lost in the armed services and will be a place for us to remember them and the sacrifices they made for their country.”
