LADIES are all set for the off when Pontefract Racecourse mixes fashion and racing for its annual ladies’ day next week.

A pair of James Bond look-alikes will be on hand to greet ladies arriving at the premiere enclosure on Wednesday August 8, with free buttonholes and bubbly for the first 500 women.

The seven-race event gets under starter’s orders at 2.30pm with a handicap contest for gentlemen amateur riders, while the feature race of the afternoon is a handicap contest over one-and-a-half miles, offering prize money of £10,300.

The ladies’ day event features a best-dressed competition, with prizes including a Mercedes for a day, handbags from Simply Devine, a two-night stay at Sands Apartments Scarborough, a spa day at The Feversham Arms in Helmsley, a meal for two at Rogerthorpe Manor and The Grange in York and flowers from Ackroyds.

In addition each finalist will receive an Elemis goody bag, and there is also an avenue of ladies’ shops to visit in between races.

Wednesday’s winner will also have automatic entry into the grand final of the best-dressed lady racegoer in Go Racing in Yorkshire’s competition at Doncaster Racecourse in September, which is the culmination of a special competition linking all the individual ladies’ days at Yorkshire’s racecourses this year.

She will then have a chance to win a luxury prize for six at the Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel near Doncaster.

Other races include the Keith Hammill Memorial Handicap Stakes, in memory of the father of Richard Hammill, assistant manager and clerk of the course and the Matty Bown Veterans’ Handicap Stakes – a contest over one mile for six-year-olds and upwards.

This race remembers a former employee of the racecourse, who worked at Pontefract before, during and after World War Two.
