A GROUP of Castleford writers have collaborated on a novella inspired by paintings by local artist and writer Brian Lewis.

The Book of Rebekah will be launched at Bridge Arts on Tuesday September 25 as part of its Wakefield Literature Fringe Festival.

The book is the result of a creative writing class led by Brian at Bridge Arts, where he presented budding writers with a series of his paintings. Each member chose one of the paintings and were given 40 minutes to write their own story or interpretation of the picture they had selected.

The writers then agreed to take another painting and write another chapter to the book. Within a month, all ‘chapters’, determined by the individual paintings were complete.

They have been edited by Hannah Schule-Lewis into The Book of Rebekah, a picaresque novella. The book launch next week coincides with Bridge Arts’ own fringe literature festival.

Mandy Williams, centre manager, said: “Wakefield is holdings its first literature festival in September, and as Castleford and the Five Towns is on the outskirts of the city, and often the forgotten relations, we have decided to hold our own fringe festival.”

The fringe festival takes place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, to find out more contact Mandy on 01977 556741.
