TWINS who were born 16 weeks prematurely inspired a group of bankers to run between two of their branches.

Eleven Natwest staff ran from their premises on Ropergate, Pontefract, to Westgate in Wakefield last Friday to support the neonatal special baby care unit at Wakefield’s Pinderfields Hospital.

The ten-mile challenge was inspired by their manager Nicola Furze, who gave birth to premature twins last September.

They were born after 24 weeks, weighing only one pound, six ounces and one pound, eight ounces.

One of the runners was Danny Atchinson of Pontefract, who works in the Wakefield branch.

Mr Atchinson, 26, of Northgate Lodge, said: “We wanted to give something back to the staff who cared for them as a thank you for all the good work they do.

“You don’t realise how much of a good job they do until someone close to you needs them.

“We all felt we wanted to do our bit as we are really good friends here and wanted to support Nicola.

“Customers and staff have been great in supporting us and we hope the money helps.” The team finished the route in around one hour and 40 minutes and got a few honks from passing traffic along the way.

They raised more than £1,000, which has been matched by their employer, taking the total to more than £2,000.
