Members of the All Saints Church in Ackworth have reached a 50k milestone in raising cash from a weekly coffee morning. The money has been used to run small projects in the community.

COFFEE morning regulars celebrated a golden milestone last week as their fundraising total hit £50,000.

Organisers of the weekly event at All Saints’ Church in Ackworth held a special service on Sunday to mark the occasion.

Stella Hall, who helped start the event – held every Thursday from 10am to noon – said thousands of pounds went towards installing a new kitchen and toilets for the Wakefield Road church.

She added: “When we started 11 years ago all we had was a kettle, a little heater and paper cups. We had about four people the first morning.

“Then after two or three weeks we had a few biscuits, a few buns, then a cake and it all spiralled from there.

“Now we’ve made just over £50,000 and we’ve had a big celebration. We had a packed church.”

Mrs Hall – who became a church member in 1983 – started the coffee morning in December 2001 to raise cash to repair the roof of St Cuthbert’s Church in Ackworth.

She was joined by fellow churchgoers at the service last weekend which raised more than £200 for the Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract.

Rev Paul Hartley said: “The coffee morning has pulled the community together and provided a valuable meeting place for elderly people.”
