A BOMB scare in Castleford caused residents to flee their homes.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed 19 properties were evacuated after a member of the public found a live hand grenade in the garden of an address in Dawtrie Close.

Insp Chris Norbury said the army’s bomb disposal unit were at the scene to recover the device.

He added: “We received a call at around 6.15pm from a property on Kendal Drive which backs on to Dawtrie Close.

“It appeared to be a live hand grenade and we suspect it had been there for many years.

“The bomb disposal unit has come to recover the item and make it safe.”

Insp Norbury said the grenade was found by a member of the public while they were gardening.

It is estimated around 30 people evacuated the area and were staying with family and friends.
