BOXING legend Sugar Ray Leonard and British boxing Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams hit Featherstone last week to talk about life in and out the ring.
Sugar Ray, 56, – the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in prize money – was joined by 29-year-old Nicola after stopping off at the Featherstone Rovers’ Big Fellas Stadium during his tour of the UK.
During his career, he won world titles in five weight divisions and was named 1980s Boxer of the Decade.
Sugar Ray said: “The tour so far has been amazing, there have been some very receptive fans, and we have seen some beautiful parts of the country.
“It is wonderful to meet Nicola as well, I watched her in the Olympics and I was screaming at the TV.
“She has exceeded all expectations and truly proved that women boxers have a place in the Olympics.”
Leeds-born Nicola – who was the first woman ever to compete and win in the women’s boxing at the Olympics this year – said: “This is like a dream come true. I have grown up watching all Sugar Ray’s competitions, all his fights when he was part of the fabulous four with Hagler, Hearns, and Duran.
“I admire his speed, the flash, the style and the charisma, inside and outside the ring. He inspired me to box.”
The event was organised by Tony Dunn, who owns Sports Media Promotions.
