SUPERSTAR toddler Kian Hawkins was an Express Champion Child last year for his bravery in battling a rare heart condition.

But proud mum Sharron, 34, is putting her three other boys firmly in the spotlight this year for helping the Streethouse family through tough times.

Mrs Hawkins, of Meadway, said Liam, 14, Connagh, eight, and Louis, five, deserve just as much recognition as three-year-old Kian for their undying support.

She said: “Last year Kian was nominated for a Champion Children award and as I looked at him on stage with his three older brothers, I realised that he wasn’t the only Champion Child.

“My other boys were champions just as much as he was, and that’s why I want to nominate them. It is so important to me and my husband Johnny that they are recognised for what they have done.”

Kian made a dramatic return to hospital two days after he was born where doctors told his devastated family he had a rare condition where the middle of his heart was missing.

The youngster underwent emergency surgery for atrioventricular septal defect and battled through recovery to his first birthday, then had a second operation in March 2010.

Mrs Hawkins said: “It was the hardest time of mine and my husband’s life and if it wasn’t for the eldest boys I don’t know If we would have got through it.

“They kept us sane and grounded and we realised that whatever happened with Kian, they would be there to support us.”

She added: “I’m so very proud of them. They really do deserve this after the hard times they have all been through.

“I know it would be a great surprise for them and would let them know just how much we appreciate what they have done for Kian but for us too.”

If you want to nominate a special child, write a letter explaining why you have chosen them. Include you name, address and daytime telephone number, and contact details for the child’s family if they are different to your own.

Send your entry to Champion Children, Newsroom, Wakefield Express, Express House, Southgate, WF1 1TE or email editorial@wakefieldexpress.co.uk putting Champion Children in the subject box.

Closing date for nominations is Friday, November 16.
