BOSSES at Featherstone Rovers have submitted plans to increase capacity at the club’s stadium.

Rovers’ chiefs have presented Wakefield Council with plans to put up two new stands at the Post Office Road site, which they say will increase the club’s chance of gaining Super League status in 2014.

The proposals involve recycling two stands from the former Scarborough FC to give Rovers an extra 2,500 covered seats, which club officials hope will bring them closer to meeting the gold standard Super League criteria required by the Rugby Football League. The scheme also includes installing new floodlights and lengthening the pitch by around 15 metres to meet standards for hosting international RL games.

Craig Poskitt, Rovers’ chief executive, said: “We can’t under estimate how important this news is. It puts our Super League licence application in a much stronger position and continues our improvements both on and off the field.”

Rovers’ chiefs announced plans to redevelop the Big Fellas stadium earlier this year.

Original proposals included moving the pitch to make way for a housing development at the Railway Terrace end of the site, but this scheme was dropped in favour of lengthening the pitch.

Mr Poskitt added: “We’re not just improving the ground to tick Super League boxes – we’re looking at improving the fans’ experience as a whole.

“We’re looking at better lighting with new floodlights and lengthening the pitch to host both domestic rugby league and international rugby as well.

“This is a really exciting time for Featherstone Rovers and pivotal to our ‘Destination Super League’ plan.”

Club bosses said once planning permission was granted they hoped to start work in early autumn.
