MEMORIES of long gone collieries are the subject of a new exhibition by Castleford artist Michael Milner.

Living in the shadow of former pit heads at Glass Houghton was the inspiration for Michael, 70, who has painted the structures for 30 years.

His work – which includes both paintings of mines and wildlife landscapes – is on show at Bridge Arts on Sagar Street, Castleford, until November 13.

He said: “When I was young I used to live in a pit building. All you could see was Glass Houghton colliery wherever you were.

“From my grandma’s bedroom you could see the head gear and none of them were the same. They were a landmark.

“Once they started demolishing them, it was gone. That’s what spurred me on. Future generations wouldn’t even know what a colliery looks like.

“This is keeping the tradition and the memory alive.”

Michael also supplies the National Coal Mining Museum with his colliery prints.
