Crafty pirates, ahoy!

MINI pirates and swashbuckling maidens made their own buried treasure at Castleford’s Bridge Arts centre during a creative tea party.
Around 20 youngsters made a voyage to the Sagar Street centre’s cafe to take part in children’s activities – including puzzles, building little pirate ships, and making eye patches – organised by cafe manager Samantha Burns.
Mrs Burns said: “It was a wonderful afternoon and we had lots of children come down who were really interested in spending time at Bridge Arts.
“We ran two workshops like this in the school holidays to encourage parents to bring their children down and see what we have on offer here.
“Since getting the Coalfields Regeneration Trust grant, we have been able to organise and set up new classes to bring the community into the centre and run activities that will not only entertain the children, but give the adults a break too.
“We are now running activities every other weekend which will give residents the chance to drop off their youngsters at the centre and get them involved with creative challenges.
“We have also started our wall of fame at the back of the centre to put up the winners of our art competitions.
“At the moment we have our crazy food creatures art competition running, and anyone under the age of 14 can enter their drawings and paintings of creatures made out of food.”
Mrs Burns, who took the manager job at the cafe earlier this year, said she will also start a tots group next month, looking after children under five for an hour every Tuesday morning at 10.30am.
She added: “It’s really important we can offer our services to all the Five Towns’ parents, no matter what age their children are, and I really feel since I started this job we have been able to come up with some great activities for everyone.
“We also have a list of creative adult workshops coming up, which the details for can be found on our website.”
