PONTEFRACT Lionesses are gearing up to hold their first lantern festival in the town this Saturday.

The group hopes the procession of lights will become an annual event in Pontefract’s calendar and is inviting local people to come along and join in.

The festival procession sets off from Pontefract Castle at 6pm and will parade up Horsefair, past the front of Pontefract Town Hall, up Market Place, along Beastfair and around the war memorial, down Shoemarket and end at St Giles’ Church, where refreshments will be served.

Bernie Weston, of the Lionesses, said: “We don’t know how many people will turn up – it could be 50, it could be 1,000 – but we have given an open invitiation for everyone to join us.

“We’ve made some big lanterns, one for the Lionesses of course, but there’s also a large lantern for St Giles’ Panto Society and Pontefract Heritage Group.

“We’ve also held some workshops where people have made lots of smaller lanterns. Our only worry now is the weather, if it rains we’ll have to cancel because the lanterns are made of tissue paper, but if that happens we’ll hold it the following weekend instead.”

Anyone who wants to take part in the festival should meet at Pontefract Castle in time for the start of the procession. For further information contact Bernie on 07912 450175.
