Free castle tours

HISTORY buffs can discover Pontefract Castle’s hidden secrets during two free tours next month.

As part of the national Heritage Open Days campaign, Wakefield Council is inviting people into the castle’s depths on September 7.

At 2pm there is a special conservation tour of the remains led by the castle curator and at 3pm there is an underground magazine tour.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture said: “In Pontefract we have a well-known castle on our doorstep. The free open day is a great way to find out about the history of the castle with plenty to do and see.”

Places are limited on the magazine tour, so free places can be booked by calling 01977 723440.
