FRIENDS of a young Castleford man who plunged to his death in a Spanish hotel have raised thousands of pounds to help pay the costs of bringing his body home.

Adam Atkinson, 20, suffered fatal injuries when he reportedly fell from a stairwell at the Hotel Martinique in Magaluf at around 3am on Tuesday April 17.

The friends he was on holiday with – Gareth Yearsley, 24, Daniel Dobson, 23, and Luke Dickinson, 19 – have so far helped raise around £5,000 to help the former Castleford Academy pupil’s grieving family repay the cost of bringing Mr Atkinson’s body home from Majorca.

The trio, who are all members of the band Relentless, hosted a music night at Xscape’s Bar Fusion last Thursday April 26, where hundreds of people made donations and celebrated Mr Atkinson’s life.

Mr Dobson, of Leeds Road, Castleford, said: “It was jam-packed all night. You don’t realise how generous people can be, one man donated £1,000 and said ‘do one more song and I’ll up it to £1,500.’

“Adam’s family came down and I think it really helped them. It was overwhelming for them to see how many people cared about him.

“It was just unbelievable, you can’t thank people enough.”

A second all-day music event will be held at The Lion pub in Castleford on May 20 from 2pm where donations will be collected. A third event on June 1 will be held at the Village Hotel in Leeds, with live bands, a buffet, a charity auction, raffle and tombola.

Tickets cost £20 and can be bought by contacting Mr Yearsley on Facebook.

An inquest into Mr Atkinson’s death opened on Monday April 30 at Leeds Coroner’s Court.

The court heard how he had been with friends in the holiday resort of Magaluf on the evening of April 16 when he fell to his death from a third floor staircase.

Officer Anthony Lancaster told Leeds Coroner’s Court Mr Atkinson had “consumed a large amount of alcohol” before the tragedy occurred.
