Council bosses have received a cash injection of almost £1.4m to help fight fuel poverty across the district.

Wakefield Council has been awarded £1.1m from the Fuel Poverty Fund and £280,000 from the Cheaper Energy Together Fund.

The project – which will be run in partnership with Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) – aims to improve home energy efficiency of properties and help save people around £475 per year on fuel bills.

Coun Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “The funding for these schemes is great news for the district and will help us in our bid to decrease fuel poverty.

“We will be contacting some households that we have identified as being able to benefit from these schemes, but encourage anyone who is interested to contact us.”

Households will have the opportunity to take advantage of new roofs and loft insulation as well as joining the Energy Smart Club to help people switch suppliers.
