FOOTBALL fanatic and entrepreneur Gérard Jones is launching a new coaching academy in Pontefract with a dream of creating England’s next sports star.

The 23-year-old self made sports magnet – who set up his first company Gérard School of Football while studying at Hull University – has launched the Yorkshire arm of national coaching company Premier Skills Coaching Ltd.

The award-winning entrepreneur plans to start in Pontefract by offering training sessions at the town’s NEW college for grassroots football teams’ coaches in the Five Towns.

Mr Jones, of Selby, said: “I think Pontefract has such incredible potential and football heritage that to have the opportunity to train coaches in the area would have a tremendous knock-on effect on the players.

“We want to really give anyone who coaches a football team the chance to come and get their practice play level one course which in turn would allow the players to develop into stars.

“Pontefract is a rough diamond of football talent and all you have to do is smooth off the edges and you will have something very special.”

Mr Jones said he knew he wanted to focus his attention on Pontefract and run the coaching sessions after having trained the under 19s men’s football teams at the Park Lane college for the last two months.

He joined Premier Skills Coaching – founded in 2002 – last month after stepping down as director of coaching at Arsenal Soccer Schools in Yorkshire.

Sam Wilkinson, Premier Skills co-director, said: “Our aim is to produce innovative coaches that develop natural players, which is why we are delighted to be delivering our courses in Pontefract with Gérard who has impressed everyone at Premier Skills with his enthusiasm, knowledge and experience.”

Coaches from any grassroots team can pay £40 to attend the practice play level one course on July 28 which runs from 10am to 4pm. Email yorkshire@premierskills.com or visit www.premierskills.com for more information.
