A £32MILLION road plan will help to reduce motorway congestion in the Wakefield area.

Improvements at junctions 40 (Ossett) and 41 (Carr Gate) of the M1, and junctions 32 (Pontefract) and 31 (Castleford) of the M62 were announced by the Highways Agency this morning.

The work will start in 2014 to be completed in 2015, and has been designed to support large new developments including the thousands of homes and offices planned at Snowhill.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “These road improvements prove the Government’s determination to accelerate growth and cut congestion.

“Keeping traffic moving is vital to securing prosperity. By removing bottlenecks and improving access to local enterprise zones, key international trading ports and communities, these road schemes will help get people to and from work and power the economy.”

The southbound exit sliproad at M1 J40 will be widened to reduce congestion.

And the A650, which runs across the bridge at M1 J41, will be widened into three lanes with improved traffic lights.

Eastbound exit slip roads at M62 J31 and J32 will also be improved.

Yorkshire’s improvements are part of a £217m national scheme to remove bottlenecks and keep traffic moving on major roads.
