Green light for academy status

Council bosses have rubberstamped plans to allow six Pontefract schools to become academies as part of a new trust.

The King’s School, Lark’s Hill J&I School, Carleton Community High School, Halfpenny Lane Junior Infant and Nursery School and Orchard Head J&I School will become part of the Pontefract Academy Trust on April 1.

Wakefield Council’s cabinet approved the proposals at a meeting this week, after each school’s governing body applied to the Pontefract Education Trust (PET) to become academies.

Coun Olivia Rowley said: “I am pleased that although the schools have opted to become academies, they have indicated how keen they are to continue their close relationship with the council. This will enable us to carry on supporting them and help us ensure our children get the best education possible.”

Land and buildings will transfer to the Trust next month on a 125-year lease at a peppercorn rent. The land is currently held on trust by PET.
