Gullies are ‘nightmare’
ANGRY pensioner John Hayes claims blocked road gullies in Knottingley are a “nightmare” for elderly residents who are being drenched in dirty water by passing cars.
Mr Hayes, 65, said the water building up on the sides of Womersley Road was a “constant problem” for walkers who are splashed by motorists on a daily basis.
Mr Hayes, of Womersley Road, said: “The gullies have been a problem for about 12 months, older residents aren’t quick enough to jump out of the way when a car drives past and the dirty water completely soaks them from head to toe.
“It is very upsetting for people who are completely drenched as soon as they step outside their front door, but on top of that it is expensive to keep cleaning your clothes!
“I want someone to come and help us, the road is being totally neglected, which is causing a lot of distress.
“I called British Waterways and they checked out the sewerage network and said it was the gullies which were blocked, causing the water to build up and bubble over the grates.
“It is Wakefield Council’s responsibility to clear out the gullies and I have called them a number of times but they never do anything about it.
“The only person they sent was a man with sand bags, and what good is that going to do, they need to be unblocked.
“I am fed up and can’t afford to pay for my dry cleaning or the damage it will do to my wall being splashed all the time.
“It’s not just in the winter either, everyday there is water on the road, and it won’t drain away, it’s a nightmare.”
The grandfather-of-three – who has lived at the property for 37 years – said he first complained to the council 12 months ago.
Graham West, the council’s highways network manager said: “Road gullies in the district are cleansed once a year and are checked following any reports of problems.
“We will be following up Mr Hayes concerns with a site visit before the end of the month and will take any necessary action.”
