GENEROUS people have raised around £25,000 for Pontefract’s Prince of Wales Hospice by sponsoring lights to remember lost loved ones over the festive season.

The hospice’s Light Up a Life campaign invited residents to sponsor a light in the Halfpenny Lane centre’s garden, and have their dedications printed in the Express and in books of remembrance in Airedale and Pontefract libraries.

The festive appeal culminated in a special service – when the thousands of sponsored lights were switched on – followed by a Christmas market and raffle to raise further funds.

Tom Belt, hospice fundraiser, said: “It has been an amazing year for the Light up a Life appeal.

“The donations received with each dedication give the hospice the vital funds needed to continue to provide our patients with the best possible care we can.

“We hope that everyone who has made a donation will feel that their loved ones have been remembered in a very special way.

“We would like to thank them for their support to the work of the hospice.”

More than 1,000 dedications in memory of loved ones were made and recorded in the hospice’s books of remembrance.

A special book of remembrance will be printed on January 7, including all dedications, and the sponsored lights will shine in the hospice’s gardens until Friday January 4.

Tom added: “This year’s appeal has been a huge success.

“We would like to also thank the Express who have really helped us to spread the word to our local community.”
