Hospital buildings to close

HEALTH bosses have announced plans to relocate services and close Clayton Hospital in Wakefield by early next year.

Opthalmology services have moved to Pontefract Hospital, with specialist eye services – age related macular degeneration – moved to Pinderfields Hospital.

The sexual health service at Clayton will move into the city centre location of the King Street NHS Walk-in Centre from October 31.

There is also an ongoing project to relocate services currently in the old Pontefract General Infirmary south side building (off Mayor’s Walk) into its newer facilities. An announcement is likely later this month.

Brian Dudding, head of estates, said: “We are pleased that these services are now moving into more modern facilities which will mean a better experience for our patients and a better working environment for our staff.

“These moves will also help us to be more efficient as an organisation as we won’t have to pay for the running costs of these older buildings.

“We recognise that Clayton Hospital has been a prominent feature in Wakefield since the late 19th century. Many local people will have memories of being treated there and many staff, past and present will fondly remember working there.

“We move forward while recognising the part that Clayton has played for over a hundred years.”

The trust’s intends to sell the Clayton estate, although there is currently no timescale.
