A SPORTS club has been chosen to take part in a landmark national research project into exercise and healthy living.

Pontefract Squash and Leisure Club is calling for volunteers to take part in the study after teaming up with researchers from the University of Greenwich.

The club on Stuart Road, Pontefract, is offering 80 people aged 35-50 free access to exercise equipment and health checks during the year-long study by the university and the Fitness Industry Association (FIA).

Academics at the university will monitor the parcipitants as they undergo a structured programme of exercise in the the largest study of its kind ever conducted.

Peter Todd, who runs the club and is a director of the FIA, said: “This is an opportunity for local people to take part in groundbreaking research.

“They will get three health checks at nought, six and 12 months in the study.”

The programme, which will from November 19 to November 18 next year, aims to demonstrate how exercise can improve wellbeing, prevent the risk of chronic diseases and reduce the burden on the NHS.

The project follows a succesful pilot study in 2011

The FIA’s David Stalker said: “Most people know exercise if good for them, however ofted knowing isn’t enough.

“People need the facts and figures to demonstrate they need to exercise, as well as the support to stick with it. This study offers all of those things.”
