OLYMPIC torchbearers from across the Five Towns are urging residents to line the district’s streets when the flame arrives on June 25.

The torch will be carried through Castleford, Pontefract and Ackworth by 13 inspirational people who have been selected from thousands of nominees.

Six of the lucky torch carriers met Coun Dave Dagger and pupils at a school in Wakefield last week to drum up support for the big day.

Coun Dagger, cabinet member for culture, sport and libraries, said: “This is the district’s moment to shine as people from across the world will be watching the flame as it travels through our streets.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our communities to come together and celebrate the spectacle of the Olympic torch relay.

“On the day the atmosphere will be electric, don’t miss out. Line the streets, take a flag or banner and really get into the spirit of this wonderful event.”

Castleford torchbearers Jez Turner and Frankie Townsend joined Helen Fairhurst – who will be carrying the torch in Pontefract – and Andy Sellars, Mick Cordall and Sharon Berry, who will be carrying the torch in Ackworth.

The torch arrives in Wakefield at approximately 11.10pm and comes to Leeds Road in Castleford at the junction of Joffre Avenue at around 11.45pm.

It will then turn right onto Front Street and right again on Park Road at noon, before hitting Jubilee Way in Pontefract at 12.05pm.

Torchbearers will then bear right along Mill Hill Road at 12.10pm, before heading up Ackworth Road and past King’s School at 12.15pm.

It will leave Pontefract via Ackworth Road near Holgate Gardens and finish its route through the district via Meadow Way off Pontefract, stopping at Ackworth School if it’s ahead of schedule, then onto Barnsley Road and Oakfield Park School at Ackworth Moor Top.
