A MAN has died after falling with his two dogs from a bridge onto the A1 carriageway on Tuesday night.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after the man – who has not yet been named – fell from one of the A639 bridges onto the southbound carriageway at Barnsdale Bar, Darrington, on October 30 at around 7.55pm.

A police spokesman said emergency services attended, but the man, who is believed to have been in his late 50s and from Knottingley, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering head injuries.

He added: “One of the dogs also died as a result of its injuries, while the other was taken into the care of a local vet where it is recovering.”

A section of southbound carriageway between Wentbridge and Barnsdale was closed while accident investigation work was carried out at the scene.

Motorists were diverted onto the M1 and M18 before the carriageway was reopened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Officers are continuing with their enquiries and want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident.

Anyone who saw what happened can contact the Major Collisions Enquiry Team on 01924 293047 or via the non emergency helpline on 101.
