Man jumps into freezing cold river in attempt to escape arrest

A 26-year-old man jumped into a freezing cold river in Castleford to escape arrest early this morning (Wednesday).

Police were called to reports of a man acting suspiciously on a building site in Castleford town centre at around 12.30am. When officers arrived the man fled the scene and jumped into the River Aire in an attempt to escape arrest.

He was arrested and has been charged with the attempted theft of a motor vehicle.
