Meat scandal leads to boost for butchers

Butchers across the Five Towns say they have noticed an increase in trade since the revelations that horse meat has been found in some supermarket meals.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) ordered authenticity tests on all beef processed products earlier this month after up to 100 per cent horse meat was found in some Aldi and Findus products.
The scandal has seen the FSA close down a slaughterhouse in Todmorden and an abattoir in Wales.
Butchers across the area said there had been an increase in the number of people buying meat from them.
Jack Wright, of Croft and Squires butchers, on High Street, Ferrybridge, said: “It’s hard to put a figure on it but we are definitely seeing more people through the door.
“We have also seen one or two of our old customers coming back to get their meat from us.”
Mr Wright, 65, said the boost to trade was welcome after a tough few years.
He added: “It’s a boost that’s much needed but whether it’s going to be short lived or not I don’t know.”
Goodworth Brothers on Front Street, Pontefract, have also had a boost to trade since the news broke.
John Goodworth, 62, who has been a butcher for almost 50 years, said: “The price of processed food should have set alarm bells ringing a long time ago.
“You have got at least five different people along the way trying to make profit from a £1.20 meal.
“We have definitely seen an increase in people buying beef and minced products over the last few weeks, which is good news for us.”
