Memorial match
A FOOTBALL match in memory of Pontefract youngster Aaron Page who drowned on his eighth birthday has raised £1,000 for charity.
Officers from Pontefract and Knottingley neighbourhood policing team (NPT) joined members of Aaron’s family last month to raise cash for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The police team squared off against a team from Ladybalk WMC – which included Aaron’s father Alan and 16-year-old brother Josh – and held a raffle and sports quiz to boost their donation.
PC Ian Heaslip of the NPT, said: “We held an event last year in memory of Aaron and after the match, I was in the club with Alan when he said the Air Ambulance had done a fantastic job of trying to save his son.
“He decided to wanted to raise as much money for them as he could and I said it was a great idea. The day was so good and afterwards we all said we would make it an annual event.”

Aaron died during a family trip to Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire in June 2010 when he slipped on some rocks and was swept away by the river.
Emergency services including Yorkshire Air Ambulance formed rescue teams to help save Aaron, whose body was recovered around three hours later.
Aaron’s mum, Katrina, of Monkhill Drive, said: “We raised £1,000 which was brilliant. We didn’t expect to get that much and it was good to do something in Aaron’s memory.
“Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the day Aaron died and did a lot for us, so we decided to raise money for them.”
