PONTEFRACT Racecourse will host the second running of the Jeff and Margaret Smith Memorial Handicap Stakes on July 10 – dedicated to the memory of a Castleford couple.
Mr and Mrs Smith, who both died in 2010, met when Mr Smith was on national service and they married in 1961.
Their son Gary said: “They would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year, and as both were keen racegoers at Pontefract, naming a race after them seemed like a fitting tribute.
“They particularly enjoyed attending the first July meeting, as it gave them an opportunity to sit out on the members’ lawn and socialise with friends.”
The couple lived in Castleford, Mr Smith worked at Yorkshire Imperial Metals in Stourton, while Mrs Smith worked at LR Davis and ended her career working at Burberry. As well as their son, the couple had a daughter, Karen.
Gary added: “We’re hoping friends and former colleagues will gather round the paddock to toast their lives.”
