Metal thieves target Castleford Tigers

Castleford Tigers have been dealt another blow after thieves attempted to swipe more metal cabling from their ground.

The Express reported earlier this month how yobs struck at Tigers’ Wheldon Road ground over the festive period - stealing more than £15,000 worth of electric cabling used to power the hospitality boxes, floodlights and turnstiles.

Club chief executive Steve Ferres said that thieves had again attempted to target the ground after more than £15,000 of cabling was stolen between December 23 and January 3.

He said: “It’s a devastating impact at any time but more so now when times are tough. We are striving hard to be the biggest part of the community that we can be and there will be people within the community that will know who is doing it.

“Somewhere along the line we will have touched those that are doing it. It’s such a small place and we have 20,000 people, half of Castleford, signed up to support our bid for a new stadium.”

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information about the incident to come forward.

Inspector Dave Bugg, of the Castleford neighbourhood policing team, said: “It’s had a massive impact at the club but it could have an even bigger impact on the community of Castleford if anything was to happen to the club and we are just appealing for the public to be vigilant.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Wakefield CID on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
