Mountain climb for Michael

Ruth Land and Louise Watling

TEN friends will scale the UK’s highest peaks in memory of Darrington entrepreneur Michael Land who died from a heart attack aged 28.

Business owner Mr Land, who grew up in Pontefract, died from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) after a night out with his fiancee Louise Watling in February.

His university friends have now vowed to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours to raise money for charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Mr Land’s mother, Ruth Cain, 57, and Miss Watling, 25, will join them during the final hike on June 30.

She said: “Michael’s friends wanted to do it in his memory and I think it’s a really wonderful thing to do. Louise and I will do the last mountain with them, we think CRY is such a good cause.”

Mrs Cain, of Park Avenue, said her son, a keen sportsman who was due to get married next year, had been picked to appear on TV show Dragons’ Den later this year after setting up his own business, Yorkshire Fitness Hire Ltd.

She is now urging people to sponsor the trek and raise awareness of the condition.

She said: “You just never know what’s going to happen. All young people should be tested for SADS.”

To sponsor the team visit justgiving.com/michael-land-28 or text LAND83 and the amount you want to donate to 70070.
