New community hub for Fryston

A NEW outdoor community centre offering activities and workshops to youngsters is to be developed at Fryston Village.

Plans for a £100,000 facility at Wheldale Lane have been submitted by Wakefield Council in partnership with Castleford Heritage Trust and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The site will be rented to the Trust on a 25 year lease for a peppercorn rent and is to be used by community groups and schools for lessons, meetings and events.

Alison Drake, chairman of the trust, said the centre was due to open in the autumn and added: “It is to be a very useful and exciting centre for the community, for young people in the village and schools and groups who want to get involved.

“It’s primarily a community centre but it will give access to the river and the woodland area running along from Fryston Country Trails to Fryston Woods.

“We’re really delighted, it’s an amazing thing for the community and we’ve come so far, it’s great to get to this stage and know it’s happening.”

The HCA and council hope to provide funding to develop the project with the running and management of the site being undertaken by the trust with support from residents and community groups.

Coun Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “This would be an invaluable facility for the community and will improve the social and economic wellbeing of the area.

“As part of the original master plan for this area a need for a community facility was established and with the help of the HCA and the trust, I am really pleased that plans for this facility are moving forward.”
